Reaction of the Habitants

The habitants habitant: a farmer in New France. were probably disgruntled by the entrenching of the church tithe and seigneurial seigneurial system: a feudal system of land ownership whereby huge grants put land ownership in the hands of seigneurs who rented sections to farmers. dues in the Quebec Act since these fees came out of their pockets. They could still obtain land for free, though, which was one positive concession for them.
